Offered are a rare set of 3 Grainger Worcester soup plates.
The soup plates are a large size typical of this period circa 1860 to 1880.
These plates have a distinct "Leaf Ground" mark and painter's mark on the base. See photo.
The soup plates have a lovely green leaf-designed border and a botanical transfer print with polychrome hand-painted enamel detail.
George Grainger produced these plates and eventually sold his company to Royal Worcester in 1889.
They measure about 10 inches in diameter and are heavy.
HISTORY:
Thomas Grainger and Company began manufacturing porcelain in 1806 to supply the lower end of the market.
They were one of three porcelain makers for Worcester and continued production until 1902.
After their beginning, they soon became the competition for Chamberlain and Barr and Flight and Barr porcelain makers
at Worcester. The quality and skill of Grainger's craftsmanship are evident in the plates listed.
Age-appropriate wear is evident with a slight loss of gilt. There are no chips or cracks.
The beauty of these soup plates is still prominent.
The colors are quite beautiful. Overall good condition.
Truly a find. Great for Fall soups and magnificently displayed.
