Here are nine stunning pink dessert plates manufactured by Copeland Spode for J.E. Caldwell and Co. of Philadelphia in 1890.
They are beautifully decorated with a lovely floral bouquet hand-painted in the center well.
The unusual fluted rims are finished with a square gilded scalloped edge.
The hand-painted and enameled floral garland is a skillfully done feature that adds to the luxury tone of the set.
Family heirloom.
HISTORY:
From 1847 to 1970 the company was owned outright by the Copeland family and many times showed a variation of Copeland often used in conjunction with the Spode name on the back stamp.
From the late 1800s to 1963, impressed marks were used to date the pieces.
A letter to indicate the month and two numbers to reflect the year.
These plates have an impressed mark showing the manufacture date to be 1890.
J.E. Caldwell was established in 1839, almost 2 centuries ago, initially selling silver and jewelry.
By the late 19th century, Spode and Minton dinnerware was being manufactured for J.E. Caldwell and marked under the glaze as such.
In 1866 Copeland Spode was appointed china and glass manufacturer to the Prince of Wales( the future King Edward VII.
MEASUREMENTS:
They measure 8 7/8 inches in diameter.
CONDITION:
They are in excellent condition and ready for use in dining or display.
