HISTORY:
John Doulton (1793- 1873)
The Royal Doulton Company is one of the most renowned English companies producing tableware and collectibles, with a history dating back to 1815. It takes its name from John Doulton who became one of the best pot throwers in London. Soon after he joined forces with Lambeth Pottery to form Jones, Watts, and Doulton that same year 1815. thus Royal Doulton has been producing porcelain ceramics and tableware for 200 years.
Over time, the three-member partnership changed to Doulton. His son Henry Doulton built the business and relocated it to Stoke-on-Trent 60 years later. The focus was on a variety of decorative products for affluent buyers.
In 1882
Dolton began producing porcelain pieces in brilliant colors strengthened by bone china. By 1885
Dolton was producing world-class wares for an international clientele. Queen Victoria was so impressed with their wares that knighted Henry Dolton the son in 1887. The company adopted its new name, Royal Doulton, in 1901. They were well established as producing fashionable and high-quality bone china during the first half of the 20th century.
After World War II, the emphasis on production shifted to simpler designs that could be mass-produced at affordable prices. These pieces are now mostly produced in Indonesia, while the higher-quality items are still made in England.
