Offered is a rare set of four antique Grainger Worcester dessert compotes.
The inner border is a lovely sky blue shade with an elaborately gilded-scalloped border and heavily gilded rims.
There is no maker's mark on these compotes; however, another listing ( matching dessert plates) has the impressed mark authenticating their manufacturer has been sold
MEASUREMENTS:
The tall compotes measure about 12 1/4 inches at the widest point.
On e of them measures 7 inches tall.
The shorter compotes measure about 11 5/8 inches at the widest point
It measures 2 1/2 inches tall
HISTORY:
Thomas Grainger and Company began manufacturing porcelain in 1806 to supply the lower end of the market.
They were one of three porcelain makers for Worcester and continued production until 1902.
After their beginning, they soon became the competition for Chamberlain and Barr and Flight and Barr porcelain makers at Worcester. The quality and skill of Grainger's craftsmanship are evident in the plates listed.
CONDITION:
Porcelain manufactured during the mid-1800s will have acquired some minor imperfections.
This set has been used primarily for display, which explains their excellent condition.
