HISTORY:
John Doulton (1793-1873)
The Royal Doulton Company is one of the most renowned English companies producing tableware and collectibles, with a history dating back to 1815. It takes its name from John Doulton who became one of the best pot throwers in London.
Soon after he joined forces with Lambeth Pottery to form Jones, Watts, and Doulton in the same year of 1815. Thus Royal Doulton has been producing porcelain ceramics and tableware for 200 years.
The three-member partnership dropped to two members Doulton and Watts and eventually, the company changed to Doulton.
It was his son Henry Doulton who actually built up the business and relocated it 60 years later to Stoke-on-Trent. The focus was on a variety of decorative products for the affluent buyer.
In 1882 Doulton began producing porcelain pieces in brilliant colors strengthened by bone china. By 1885 Doulton was producing world-class wares for an international clientele.
Queen Victoria was so impressed with their wares that she knighted Henry Doulton the son in 1887.
The company was able to adopt its new name Royal Doulton in 1901.
By this time they were well established as producers of fashionable and high-quality bone china during the first half of the 20th century.
After World War II production emphasis shifted to simpler designs that could be mass-produced at affordable prices.
These pieces are now mostly produced in Indonesia while the higher quality items are still made in England at the home of the parent company Waterford, Wedgwood, and Royal Doulton Group.
