A rare 10-piece antique Davenport china set
5 classically-styled dinner plates and 5 soup plates with a white body and gold embellishments.
Decorated with purple grapes and green leaves.
Gold trim featured on the raised edge of the Davenport pieces is similar to the Louis XVI crossed ribbon motif achieving a striking effect.
Back mark on the plates and platter dates their manufacture to circa 1830.
HISTORY:
The plates and platter were manufactured by John Davenport, born in 1765 and began potting in 1785.
He began as a workman and later as a partner with Thomas Wolfe of Stoke.
He acquired his pottery at Longport for the manufacture of earthenware in 1794.
In 1830 he retired, and his two sons, Henry and William, carried on the firm until 1835, when Henry died.
The firm became William Davenport and Company. William died in 1869 and his sons took over the direction of the business, which remained in the family until 1887.
MEASUREMENTS:
5 dinner plates measure 10 1/4 inches in diameter.
5 soup bowls measure 8 1/2 inches in diameter.
CONDITION:
The dinner plates and soup plates are in good antique condition
No chips, cracks, or crazing.
One dinner shows fading on the center circles.
