Eight rare antique Copeland Spode botanical dessert plates and a pair of serving dishes are offered.

They feature unusually shaped rims molded and scalloped with gilt trim in the "Gothic" shape.

There was a more artistically executed example of this pattern, which features the same "Gothic" shape that has been fully reticulated.

These plates show this design without the reticulated feature.

Circa 1848.

HISTORY:
Josiah Spode was born in 1733, and after several years of gaining experience working for other local potters, he established his shop in 1776. He concentrated, as did his friend Josiah Wedgewood, on the production of ceramic wares of the finest quality. This is the keyword to remember quality.

He focused his attention on the porcelain manufacturers and, in 1796, introduced "bone china" because its formula contained calcined ox-bone.

DIMENSIONS:
Eight plates measure 9 3/8 inches in diameter.
The pair of serving dishes measures 9 1/8 inches in diameter and 2 1/2 inches tall.

CONDITION:
The plates are in excellent condition with no cracks, chips, or crazing.
Both of the serving dishes have hairlines but are entirely stable.
While the plates are ready for the table, the serving dishes are best on display.

FINAL COMMENTS:
This is a rare opportunity to obtain a set from this early period of the 19th century.
The set is a work of art!

These dessert plates are special and not readily available on the open market. In my 30-plus years of collecting, I have never seen plates like these.
