10 rare Antique English dinner plates retailed by Ovington Brothers China and Glass.
Elaborately decorated with embossed gilded medallions on the yellow border. The application of the design took great skill to execute.
These plates' stunning design and heirloom quality make them worthy candidates for display.
There is a faded crown mark on the back of each plate that is difficult to see.
However, the set has all the attributes to suggest a major manufacturer of the period, and the Ovington Bros designation further enhances this assessment.
They are exquisite!
Heirloom quality!
HISTORY:
Ovington Brothers China and Glass was founded by Theodore and Edward Ovington in 1843. The first shop was in Brooklyn, New York.
They imported and sold high-quality china and glassware.
While not a manufacturer itself, it became a prominent name in decorative arts, with some pieces bearing its distinctive backstop, as seen in items painted by Helena Wolfsohn for the company.
After the brothers' passing, some of their other family members continued the cha ware business under the name "Ovington Pottery," which is still found in antique shops today.
Also, pieces with the "Ovington Brothers" backstop are sought after by collectors today.
