$4,600.00
Offered is a spectacular, one-of-a-kind antique dessert set featuring seven dessert plates.
Attributed to Machin & Co, circa 1820.
The pattern features the scarce "inverted shell" molding and hand-painted flowers.
Machin & Company was one of the many potteries in Staffordshire and was a contemporary with companies such as Spode, Coalport, H&R Daniel, and others during the 1820s and 1830s.
Machin 7 Company operated only between 1812 and 1830 and produced very high-quality porcelain.
Other Staffordshire companies, including Alcock, Ridgway, Minton, and others also produced this "inverted shell" or "dropped shell" shape.
A similar plate can be seen in an image on page 143 of Bll Thom's book " Machin Porcelains and Earthenwares".
Typically, these plates are unmarked but numbered in script.
The decoration focuses on skillfully hand-painted botanicals on a crisp white ground and pretty shell accents.

HISTORY:
In the early 19th century, Joseph Machin and Company was one of the principal manufacturers of china and earthenware during the
Regency period 1810-1825.
However, due to the bankruptcy of the Stoke-based factory in the late 1830s, their name disappeared from public knowledge.
Their wares have always been popular with collectors but were often wrongly cataloged as being by those makers whose names had survived.
