This striking antique botanical English china set features three large soup plates with an aqua border and a hand-painted floral center.
The quality of the craftsmanship and richness of design confirm Samuel Alcock as the manufacturer who was active for a short period from 1822 to 1859.
The three large soup plates are 10 1/2 inches in diameter and noticeably heavy!
HISTORY:
The Alcock bone china body is of good quality, well-potted, and very richly decorated.
In 1833, the factory employed more than 400 people, and their 20 Kilns equaled those in use by Minton.
Most of their porcelains between 1830 and 1840 are unmarked.
This is why the firm is so little known and often mistaken for Rockingham or Coalport.
The quality is there --but not the maker's mark. There is a pattern number.
These numbers quickly increased, and a fractional pattern number was introduced, i.e. 1/1234. This numbering system is shown
on these plates.
The rare set was retailed at Thos Pearce & Son at Ludgate Hill in London.
This company worked primarily as a jeweler and silversmith but sold luxury goods for the drawing room and the library.
Specifically, they used alabaster, marble, and bronze. During the 1850s, they also added fine-quality dinner service.
